چکیده

Bioremediation efforts sometimes rely on surfactants to enhance hydrocarbon bioavailability. However, synthetic surfactants are toxic to some degrading microorganisms. In this study we screened a natural surfactant-rich compartment, the sea surface microlayer (SML), for surfactant-resistant bacteria, using enrichment cultures of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). A random set of isolates obtained from enrichment cultures was tested by PCR for the Pseudomonas genus marker gacA gene and the ndo gene, encoding for PAH-degrading enzyme naphthalene dioxygenase. Results indicate a high abundance of surfactant resistant bacteria in the SML. An exponential increase in the number of culturable bacteria (7– 8 logs) was observed during the course of the enrichment culture. gacAtargeted PCR revealed that 30% of the surfactant-resistant isolates corresponded to Pseudomonads. However, amplification of sequences corresponding to ndogene involved in PAH-degrading pathways was not yet successful.

Isolation and Identification of Anionic Surfactant Degrading Bacteria from Activated Sludge

Linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LABS) is an anionic surfactant widely used all over the world. They will eventually end-up and accumulate in household or industrial sewage. Due to their high foaming capabilities which can cause numerous problems in sewage treatment facilities as well as direct toxic effects on many different organisms in ecosystem they are generally considered as serious polluta...

Antibiotic Sensitivity of Neustonic Bacteria in Lake Jeziorak Mały

This paper presents the results of research on the antibiotic sensitivity of bacteria inhabiting the surface microlayer (SM) and the subsurface water (SSW) of Lake Jeziorak Mały. It follows from the results that doxycycline, oxytetracycline and nalidixic acid are characterized by the strongest antibacterial effect. For some antibiotics, different strengths of the effect on bacteria isolated fro...

Frequency of Antibiotic Resistance in Bacteria Inhabiting Water of Downtown Pond

Antibiotic resistance of heterotrophic bacteria isolated from the surface microlayer and subsurface water of downtown pond was determined. The levels of resistance of bacteria to various antibiotics differed considerably. It follows from the results that bacteria were most resistant to penicillin and sensitive to gentamycin, neomycin and oxytetracycline. Majority of bacterial strains were chara...

Fine-scale variability in methanol uptake and oxidation: from the microlayer to 1000 m

The aim of this research was to make the first depth profiles of the microbial assimilation of methanol carbon and its oxidation to carbon dioxide and use as an energy source from the microlayer to 1000 m. Some of the highest reported methanol oxidation rate constants of 0.5– 0.6 d−1 were occasionally found in the microlayer and immediately underlying waters (10 cm depth), albeit these samples ...

Isolation and Identification of Heavy Metal Resistant Bacteria from Industrial Wastewaters in Guilan Province

Heavy metal pollution by natural factors is a world-wide phenomenon. Release of large quantities of heavy metals without handling proper processes that could decrease the concentration of such a material is a hassle that makes strains resistant to these heavy metals apart from entering into human food chain. In this research, wastewater of four firms in Guilan province such as Foolad, Risandegi...
